EA have just opened EA Gothenburg, which will focus on a “new generation of games” using the Frostbite 2 engine. That’s the notoriously pretty tech that powered Battlefield 3 and Need For Speed: The Run.



Frostbite 2 was created by Stockholm-based EA DICE, and has yielded impressive results on PC and, to a lesser extent, console. It also manages to push my rig to the absolute limit, which makes me happy. EA Gothenburg are currently hiring for over 12 new staff, so give them a shout if you have the skills and want in. PC gaming has never felt more alive! According to The PC Gaming Alliance‘s Horizons Research 2011 report, we spent a record-breaking $18.6 billion on PC games last year. That’s 15% more than 2010′s figures. We are best.



If the report is anything to go by, PC gaming might literally take over the world in the near future. “No geographical market segments tracked showed a decline in 2011 in overall PC game revenue, while China continues to grow at nearly twice the rate of the overall global market for PC games with growth of 27% resulting in record 2011 revenue of $6 billion,” states the report. “Additionally, the mature game markets of Korea, Japan, US, UK, and Germany demonstrated significant growth in 2011, together recording increased revenue of 11% in 2011 to $8 billion.”



Everyone loves playing games on PC, basically.

The fine folks over at EA DICE have posted their first in a series of previews of some of the classic Battlefield 3 maps that will be available at launch with the game. DICE has also posted a concept image along with some Q&A from the designers of the new Karkand map as well as a new wallpaper.

Containing four of the best Battlefield maps ever created by DICE, the first expansion pack for Battlefield 3 will be a treat both for returning fans and newcomers. Read on for more in-depth details on Battlefield 3: Back to Karkand and how to get it at no extra charge. 



Anyone who preorders Battlefield 3 will receive our first themed expansion pack at no extra charge. When Lead Designer Niklas Fegraeus got the assignment to lead the expansion pack, his thoughts immediately went to the four most played and loved maps in the history of Battlefield: Strike at Karkand, Wake Island, Gulf of Oman, and Sharqi Peninsula. EA posted a list of all the Battlefield 3 pre-order incentives that will be available at certain retailers. The only part missing is what retailers will be offering each incentives, but the post explains this should be announced by the beginning of August. Pre-ordering on EA Orgin will unlock a special Battlefield 3 Beret and Battlefield 3 Edition 870 Combat Shotgun in Battlefield Play4Free. Information on this can be found here.

EA recently posted a list of digital retailers that will be selling Battlefield 3 all over the world. One major player that isn't on the list yet is Steam. In the past couple weeks EA has had some problems with Valve, presumably due to the newly launched EA Orgin, which is similar to Steam. In this blog series, you’ll learn more about every aspect of our biggest shooter ever. This time out is a look at the classes found in multiplayer with Senior Mulitplayer Designer Alan Kertz.



Here at DICE, we’re very proud of the team play functionality that we have become known and loved for in the Battlefield series, and we’re continuing to embrace that approach for Battlefield 3, but not without a few upgrades for the new game. In Battlefield 3, we’re making sure each of the four playable classes (Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon) are each completely capable of holding their own in combat. While they each have different specialties, each class is a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. 



If you’re that kind of lone wolf player who simply wants to jump in and cook some fools, that’s perfectly fine – we’re making sure each class in Battlefield 3 packs a mean punch on their own, giving you another chance to play it your way.
